- Tripulacin IMOCA Open 60 Movistar. Etapa 5. Obituary : Industry loses Dixon L. Kendall, the merchandising innovator, relationship Pro

Obituary : Industry loses Dixon L. Kendall, the merchandising innovator, relationship Pro

On August 25, the marine industry lost a man who helped create the concept of retail merchandising for propellers. Dixon L. Kendall, of Morton Grove, Illinois, died of a heart attack at the age of 74. A Chicago native, Kendall brought decades of merchandising and marketing experience to his tenure with Turning Point Propellers, where he served as vice president until 2008. The company was the first to create colorful retail packaging and displays for dealers, complete with propeller selection charts and software and promotional support. Once quoted in Boat Motor Dealer as believing that success could be achieved with perseverance and not being like everybody else, Kendall was also known for his personal relationships with customers and good sense of humor. Time spent in the field with accounts and salespeople is invaluable, he said in the article. Kendall worked at Turning Point alongside his son Adam and wife Anne. My Dad taught me early on that relationships are vital. He was a true salesman and cared about people in the industry. He is deeply missed, and we appreciate the kind words and fond memories our friends have shared about him, Adam Kendall said. He enjoyed fishing, spending time in Northern Wisconsin with his family and golfing. Last Updated ( Wednesday, 01 September 2010 )

34th America's Cup official dates released

The 2013 races dates for the Louis Vuitton Cup and Americas Cup Match (Finals) have been confirmed by Regatta Director Iain Murray. The Americas Cup Match (Finals) will run from 7-22 September 2013 with the Louis Vuitton Cup preceding the Americas Cup from 13 July to 1 September 2013. The regatta will be held at San Francisco Bay, USA. Since 1983, the Louis Vuitton Cup - the Americas Cup Challenger Series - has been held when more than one Challenger is vying for the right to race the Defender for the Americas Cup (as is the case for the 34th Americas Cup). The role of the Louis Vuitton Cup is twofold - not only to select the best Challenger, but also to help prepare that team to race successfully against the Defender in the Americas Cup Match (Finals). The winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup will race the Golden Gate Yacht Clubs (GGYC) defending team in the finals, a first-to-win-five (best of nine) race series known as the Americas Cup Match (Finals). Nearly 160 years old, the Americas Cup is the oldest trophy in international sport. Initially a one-on-one competition between teams representing foreign yacht clubs, the Americas Cup has evolved into one of the worlds leading sporting competitions - featuring the best sailors on the worlds fastest boats - the wing-sailed AC45 and AC72 catamarans. Entries now open for the 2012 RYA Eric Twiname Championships

Entries now open for the 2012 RYA Eric Twiname Championships

The RYA is pleased to announce that entries are now being accepted online for the 2012 RYA Eric Twiname Championships, which are set to descend on Rutland Sailing Club across the weekend of 12 13 May 2012. This annual Junior event, one of the highlights of the RYAs Racing calendar, is now in its 26th year and will see young competitors in over 285 boats and windsurfers pit their sailing skills against the best young talents from each of the six English Zones, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, in a bid to help their Zone or home country team clinch the coveted Eric Twiname Shield at the end of the weekend. The highly charged weekend will offer the RYA Zone/Home Country Squads competitive racing in a fun and friendly environment. The weekend will welcome boats from across nine of the RYA Junior classes - Optimist, Topper, Feva, Mirror and Cadet dinghy classes with the windsurfers racing on Bic Techno boards with 4.5m, 5.8m, 6.8m and 7.8m rigs. Last years event witnessed a very high standard of racing across all classes, however it was the RYA West Zone who reigned triumphant as they were crowned 2011 RYA Eric Twiname Champions. This year is set to be another tight affair with all Squad sailors training hard over the winter months giving each Zone the potential to proudly walk away with 2012 Championship honours. Chris Blackburn, RYA Eric Twiname Championships Event Director, commented: As the culmination of the RYA Winter Zone Squad training, the sailors really look forward to the RYA Eric Twiname Championships, as one of the first opportunities of the year to put into practice all they have learnt over the winter, and reap the rewards of their time spent training within their squad and at their home clubs. For some of the sailors this will be their first time competing in a multi class, multi course, national event, and this experience will put them in good stead for their Summer regatta programme. Thanks to the long-standing and on-going support of the Eric Twiname Memorial Trust, the event, for sailors aged between eight and 15, is very cheap to enter with almost all of the costs associated with the running of the regatta met by the RYA and the Trust. Volvo Ocean Race: Telefonica Blue's Gabri Olivo reports on a bad day

What a day... It went all wrong hour after hour - probably someone didnt go to church last Sunday. In the morning we were just in front of Ericsson 4, Delta Lloyd and PUMA, catching up with Ericsson 3 and quite happy about the battle that we had during the night to keep our position. Then we decided to go a little lower than the others and slowly, but continuously, we got sucked into a mixture of a header and a less favourable tide that we never got out from. Things went from bad to worse when we had to stop the boat three times to clear some weed from the keel. Within four hours we lost sight of all the others. Then we started three or four tacks completely out of phase and we lost more and more. Were feeling like been punched right in the face by Mike Tyson. As you can imagine, the darkness came on board. Its the first time that were last without any damage or excuses to blame on and, believe me, its not a nice feeling. You can see on everyones face how bad the mood is. But its exactly when things go so bad that you have to get up on your feet and start running again. This is the difference between the lion and the springbok, between the winner and the loser. Greece. DryShips reaches preliminary agreement with Piraeus Bank for loan restructure

DryShips Inc. (NASDAQ: DRYS), a global provider of marine transportation services for drybulk cargoes and off-shore contract drilling oil services, announced today that it has reached an in principle agreement with Piraeus Bank, one of its largest lenders, to restructure its two loan facilities in the original aggregate principal amount of $220.0 million with current outstanding $164.9 million. As part of the restructuring, caused in large part by the failure of certain buyers to conclude the agreed purchase of three vessels, the basic terms will provide for: (1) a waiver regarding financial and asset coverage covenants through January 1, 2011; (2) an increased applicable margin; (3) an amendment fee; (4) rescheduling the loan principal amortization by reducing the principal repayments by about 47% and 21% in 2009 and 2010, respectively, and reducing the tenor of the loan. The agreement is preliminary and is subject to execution of definitive documents, providing, inter alia, for substantial reduction of the loan should the three vessels be disposed, and formal approval by Piraeus Banks Credit Committee. As of the day of this release, DryShips owns a fleet of 43 drybulk carriers in the water comprising seven Capesize, 29 Panamax, two Supramax and five newbuilding drybulk vessels with a combined deadweight tonnage of approximately 3.9 million tons, 2 ultra deep water semi-submersible drilling rigs and 2 ultra deep water newbuilding drillships. Volvo Ocean Race : Year of the Tiger for Team Sanya's Teng

Teng Jiang He, a 37-year-old businessman who goes by the nickname Tiger and only started sailing last year, will become the first Chinese sailor to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race after being named on the Team Sanya crew for 2011-12. Team Sanya became the first Chinese entry in the Volvo Ocean Race when they launched their campaign in Beijing in June and skipper Mike Sanderson immediately began the search for the Yao Ming of sailing to form part of his crew. Teng, born in a small farm village in the far northeast near the border with Russia, founded a successful construction company and sailed for the first time in May 2010. After a five-week trial with Team Sanya, including a tough baptism in the Rolex Fastnet Race earlier this month, Sanderson was sufficiently impressed to offer him the chance of a lifetime. The Volvo Ocean Race is incredibly tough going and I was looking for someone with both the skill and the right attitude to contribute towards team performance, said Sanderson, who skippered ABN AMRO ONE to victory in 2005-06, the second of his two wins in the race. Tiger is definitely that person. From day one, Tiger has impressed everyone in the team. He is determined, focused and has an endless hunger to learn everything he can both on and off the boat. To prepare for the race, Tiger has been spending two hours each morning at the gym, followed by 10 hours working with the team. To relax, he has spent his evenings watching videos of former editions of the Volvo Ocean Race while his new team mates, many of them like Sanderson from New Zealand, have been teaching him a mix of English and Maori, including Kia ora mate! (Greetings, mate!) Admittedly, sailing was not my career and I didnt have that much experience compared to the others but I am very passionate about the sport and keep myself fit so Im ready for this challenge, said Tiger, who employed 300 people in his construction company before giving up the business world to sail. I also feel very proud to sail with Team Sanya, the first Chinese entry into this event. Its a very special day for me -- a dream come true. I hope that many Chinese people will become inspired to learn to sail through my experience and I also hope that we can encourage many people to visit the tropical destination of Sanya by promoting the profile of Hainan and Sanya through our beautiful race boat colours. Tiger will pull off a notable first when the nine-month, 39,000 nautical mile Volvo Ocean Race begins in Alicante on October 29. During the last edition, Guo Chuan was a Media Crew Member on the Green Dragon team but not classed as a competing sailor. Team Sanya are one of six confirmed entries for the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12. The others are Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand, Groupama sailing team, PUMA Ocean Racing powered by Berg Propulsion and Team Telefnica.Tiger Factfile: - Teng Jiang He was born in Chinas far northeast on July 21, 1974. - Aged 18 graduated vocational school and moved south to Guangzhou. - Founded a construction contracting company, which employs hundreds of workers. - Is married and has two sons, aged three and six months. - The thrill seeking car racer also enjoys a relaxing round of golf in his spare time. - Began sailing in 2010 and has wide-ranging sailing experiences, inshore and offshore, on varying sized yachts. - Will compete aboard Team Sanya in the physically demanding position of grinder. - Described competing in the Volvo Ocean Race as his dream and said he hopes to inspire the nation. - For me this would be a dream come true a dream team, a great skipper, a great crew and a boat that looks fantastic. Sail training refletions by Ian Stripey Grant

Sail training refletions by Ian Stripey Grant

Sail training has come a long way from the time when local Brisbane River kids drifted from boat shed to boat shed on the Bulimba waterfront pleading for the chance to learn the ropes. The opportunities to join a crew as the bailer boy were fairly rare however the champion skippers like Norman Wright Jnr. Lance Watts, Vic Lucas always encouraged us local river rats to serve the customary boat shed apprenticeship. Besides polishing the heavy mild steel centreboards with black boot polish the apprenticeship included the folding of spinnakers and balloon jibs then securely tying them with strands of wool to allow a safe hoist before being broken open to fill with the wind. Naturally the crewing opportunities for small lightweight kids where scarce because all of us struggled to weight 5 stone dripping wet in a woolly jumper and apart from having the endurance to keep the bailing rack dry offered little body weight on the weather side. However while a permanent crew opportunity for an eager sub-teen sailor was rare the respect for our mentors remained paramount and was always honoured with similar respect. Sailing gained a new International focus after Melbourne hosted the Olympic regatta in 1956 while the traditional Interstate skiff class clashes continued. Queensland clubs established sail training centres to encourage young male and females to compete in the Australian Sabot championships where young crews from the Mooloolaba Yacht Club dominated the honour board with success in the senior and junior titles. The success of Australian Yachting Federation accredited coaches and sail training programs have continued to promote the opportunities. Yachting Queensland high performance coach Adrian Finglas has continued to steer the careers of the gifted group of Sunshine Coast sailors on the gaining tack with star Olympic Laser dinghy skipper Ryan Palk winning selection in the Australian sailing team. Ryan Palk has already shown the determination to be further encouraged and developed into a future Olympian with the guidelines set down with the Queensland Academy of Sport program. He also has personal access to the Australian Sailing Team Laser coach and Sydney 2000 Olympic Bronze medallist Michael Blackburn. Earlier this year Michael Blackburn clearly transformed his Olympic one design sailing experience onto the International coaching stage when Tom Slingsby (26) won the World championship. Tom Slingsby has since won the Rolex World Sailor of The Year and has been nominated for Australian Institute of Sport Award. As expected the success of Tom Slingsby has promoted the opportunity for Michael Blackburn to be nominated for the Coach of the Year award. Beside assisting Tom Slingsby to win his third World championship in four years the relatively modest Michael Blackburn will continue to play a major role with the careers of the next generation of Olympic Laser dinghy sailors including the talented Ryan Palk. The AIS/Australian Sailing Team has had a very good year winning two Gold Medals a Silver and a Bronze in the Olympic class World championships to establish Australia among the best in the World. Extreme Sailing Series : Artemis Racing into the final with 14 point lead

Terry Hutchinson, skipper of Artemis Racing, aka Mr Consistency did it again on the penultimate day of the Extreme Sailing Series Act 4 in Boston. Ensuring that his team finished no lower than 5th place in any of the 8 races staged today, sees Artemis Racing go into the final day tomorrow with a 14 point lead. The Swedish team has only conceded their dominance once during the Boston event: The most important day to be leading is the last day! said Terry. I dont take anything for granted because I know how good the people around us are and how tricky the conditions can be here, so we have to keep on fighting the fight. Tomorrow is Independence Day and its a great day to be in the US.The final day often throws up surprises, and at every Act this season victory has only been secured in the final double points race. And, right now, seven teams are still in the hunt for a podium place. But sailors are renowned for being a superstitious bunch and no one is counting their chickens (or is that rabbits?) just yet Watch this latest video to discover what bad omens the sailors fear most, and their secret good luck talismans. An overcast day set the scene over Boston Harbor but that didnt seem to deter the US crowds celebrating the 4th July holiday weekend. Also at Fan Pier to experience the Extreme 40 action was US sailing legend and commentator, Gary Jobson who went for a ride on Artemis Racing, and Dawn Riley, former round the world and Americas Cup sailor. A good gradiant breeze ensured the action was close and intense, even when the threat of lightning suspended racing the teams came back out fighting after the storm had dissipated. Emirates Team New Zealand reveled in the competition, posting two race wins, to knock The Wave, Muscat off 2nd place on the overall leaderboard but Dean Barkers team only has the slenderest of margins, just 3 points, but for Leigh McMillan recently recruited as skipper, the team are exceeded expectations: It wasnt our goal here to get on the podium, for me it was a bit unrealistic, said Leigh. But we are still in the hunt for a podium place. Well go out and fight for every point.Max Sirenas team continued to improve today and like the Kiwis, two race wins, helped them overhaul the all-French team on board Groupe Edmond de Rothschild to claim 4th overall by the end of play. We had an okay day, said Luna Rossa helsman, Paul Cambell-James. We had our ups and downs but generally we are getting better and moving up. Anything can happen at the Extreme Sailing Series and tomorrow we will go out there and sail our own race. We might look at the last double points race and the scores and try to make a plan, but well try any race. Pierre Pennecs team was not able to find their form today, although a win in the final race will, hopefully, be a good omen ahead of tomorrow. Other overall place changes saw the Swiss team Alinghi claim 6th ahead of Roman Hagaras Red Bull Extreme Sailing. Despite scoring three third places, things just didnt go Hagaras way in the other races. As normal, racing in stadium mode, kept the on-water referees busy, each race lasting just 10-15 minutes. Some of the legs were so short, the teams only had time to unfurl the gennaker, gybe, then furl again before piling into the mark. It is exhausting work physically and the 11 teams will need to rest up tonight ahead of the final day tomorrow when the pressure will be fully on if they want to secure a podium place. Rolex Sydney Hobart. Alfa Romeo extends lead over ICAP Leopard & Wild Oats XI

With winds swinging to the north-east in the vicinity of South Cape just after midday, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is really on, as Alfa Romeo extends her lead over ICAP Leopard and Wild Oats XI in the race of the 100 footers to be first yacht to the finish line in Hobart. Alfa Romeo, Neville Crichtons Reichel Pugh design from New Zealand, has extended her lead to 11 miles over Mike Slades ICAP Leopard, a Farr design from Great Britain, with a further 4 nautical mile gap to Wild Oats XI (NSW), Bob Oatleys Reichel/Pugh skippered by Mark Richards. According to Alfa Romeos strategist, Tom Addis, the nor-east breeze is very light and the top three are sailing with cracked sheets, travelling at just over eight knots. However, the Bureau of Meteorology says the front half of the fleet can expect an east/north-easterly at 10-15 knots on a slight swell for the rest of the day, which should allow those in the right place to set spinnakers and put some speed on. It is still early in the race, but if Crichton can continue the trend of putting some distance between his yacht and the rest of the fleet, Alfa Romeo will break the stranglehold that Bob Oatleys Wild Oats XI has had on the 628 nautical mile race for the last four years. Crichton and his crew of luminaries such as Addis, Michael Coxon, Noel Drennan, Peter Merrington and Stu Bannatyne, are 18 nautical miles east of South Cape, almost ready to enter Bass Strait. They still have 396nm to make the finish line though, and anything could happen between now and then. In other news, it was a understandably devastated Limit crew that arrived back at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) this morning. A halyard was the cause of Alan Brierty and his crews retirement from the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race late last evening approximately 35nm east of Jervis Bay. Arriving back at the CYCA, which organises the race, this morning at 10.15am, Brierty was so upset he left the Reichel/Pugh 62 designed yacht and the talking to his project manager and strategist Rodney Keenan, a well-respected international yachtsman from New Zealand. When we broke the first one (halyard), itdamaged the second one and we thought wed get away with itfor a while, but we didnt, explained Keenan of the halyards that connect the headsail to the top of the forestay. The yacht only has two, and without them, the yacht is effectively out of action. The ropes go through a lock system inside the mast and its prettyhard to repair at sea. We tried to push on, but we decided when thesecond one failed, and wewere in a seaway where itwasnt safe to send someone up the rig, to pullthe pin, he said. After a big year is pretty unfortunate, said Keenan of Limits exceptional performance during the year, including winning the Rolex Trophy Rating Series from near-sistership and main rival for this race, Loki, Stephen Ainsworths Reichel/Pugh 63, which is still in the race.
